For this writting game, we had three bags with the categories of characters, settings, and actions written on them. Each student picks one piece of paper out of each bag and has to come up with a story using those attributes. They can include other features in their story, but they must contain those things that they drew from the bags. For example, Elisabeth drew snowman as her character, football field as her setting, and dancing in the moonlight as the action for the story. This is the short story she wrote in 15 minutes! It is amazing how much fun you can have while writing! Thanks Elisabeth for allowing us to use your great story!
The Moonlight Dance
By Elisabeth H.
The girl left through the back door of the gym where the dance was being held. The cool winter air was soothing after being in the stuffy room. The moon was out, and it’s rays made the football field seem to light up. It glistened on the powder snow that was lightly falling. As she looked out at the open field, she noticed a lumpy figure in the distance. Out of curiosity, and the fact that she didn’t want to go back into the gym full of happy people, she walked towards the unmoving figure, while snow lightly crunched beneath her shoes.
As she approached that shadowy figure, she realized that it was a snowman. Someone had put raisins as a smile, a carrot as a nose, and buttons as the eyes. It was a classic snowman. But something about this snowman was different. She realized that one of the buttons was blue and the other green. It was an imperfection. Then she started to see the other imperfections. The smile was a little crooked, and the nose was a little too long. They both had imperfections, and the snowman didn’t know hers.
A slow song drifted through the ice cold air and the girl wanted to dance, but she was alone. The she looked at the snowman and she silently thought to herself, “I can’t believe that I’m about to do this.” She stepped closer to the snowman and started to dance with him. She felt silly but continued dancing anyway. The snowman seemed to bring her confidence, enough confidence to go back to the dance. She ran towards the door. She stopped and looked back at the snowman knowing that she would never forget the night she danced in the moonlight with the person that didn’t see her imperfections but her perfections.
